Top 5 Tips for Airport Layovers

Plus 1 Bonus Tip!!!

I recently got back from my second visit to the amazing Island of Crete in Greece. Full of history, architecture, beautiful landscapes, amazing food, and friendly people; Crete is basically one of my dream destinations for a low-key, relaxing vacation! On the way back I had a long layover in Munich airport and it reminded me that I always enjoy my layovers because of my tips for airport layover and I should share them with you!

Airport layovers can be a dreaded aspect of air travel. However, with some creativity and planning, you can turn your layover into a fun and exciting part of your trip. Here are some airport layover activities that can help you make the most of your time in between flights.

  1. Explore the airport: Airports are not just places to catch flights, but they are also bustling hubs with a lot to see and do. Many airports offer a variety of amenities such as restaurants, bars, shops, and spas. Take a stroll around the airport, grab a bite to eat, and shop for some souvenirs to take back home. Additionally, some airports have walking or running tracks, so you can get some exercise and explore the airport at the same time.
  2. Take a nap: Long flights can be exhausting, so why not use your layover to catch up on some sleep? Many airports have designated sleeping areas, comfortable seating, or even private rooms that you can rent to rest and rejuvenate. This way, you’ll be energized for the next leg of your journey.
  3. Enjoy a nice meal: Some airports have amazing restaurants with great chef-created meals. Sit down for a slow meal with appetizers and drinks and coffee and spend a few hours lingering at your table. You can even use the time to catch up on travel planning, social media, travel journalling, or chatting with your travel companions.
  4. Take a tour: Some airports offer guided tours of their facilities. You can take a tour of the airport or nearby airport museums or attractions, and learn about area history, architecture, and operations. This is a great way to kill time and learn something new.
  5. Catch up on work: If you have some work to do, use your layover to catch up on it. Many airports offer workspaces with desks, chairs, and Wi-Fi. You can use this time to respond to emails, finish a report, or even have a virtual meeting.
  1. And my favourite tip for the bonus tip! Go sightseeing: If you have a longer layover, you can leave the airport and explore the city. Many airports offer luggage storage facilities, so you don’t have to carry your bags with you. You can visit nearby tourist attractions or take a city tour. I’ve explored Seoul, South Korea, Friesing, Germany, Athens, Greece, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and more on long layovers. Just make sure you leave enough time to get back to the airport before your next flight!

Conclusion: As you can see, airport layovers don’t have to be boring. With some planning, you can turn your layover into a fun and productive part of your trip. So, the next time you have a layover, try some of these activities and make the most of your time in between flights.
