Gibraltar Adventure: Perfect One-Day Itinerary for Travelers

Hey There, Traveller! Have you ever taken a single step and felt transported into an entirely new reality?

Gibraltar Day Trip: Monkeys, Views & British Charm at Spain’s Doorstep

Gibraltar is a peninsula located off the southern coast of Spain, in the region of Andalusia. A British Overseas Territory since 1713, it sits at the entrance to the Mediterranean. Because the land has been in the possession of many peoples, the history is full of historic accounts and narratives as well as outstanding and important sites.

The land is compact and fascinating, so it’s perfect for a day trip from southern Spain! You can get around on a tour, by public transit, or easily visit the main town area on foot. Perched at the edge of Europe, Gibraltar offers wild encounters with cheeky monkeys, secret wartime tunnels to explore, and sweeping ocean views that stretch to Africa. After the adventure, nothing beats a hearty pub lunch overlooking the sparkling strait.

Getting There

From Spain, you cross the border from La Línea — it’s super simple, and you can drive, walk, or take a tour across – just don’t forget your passport!

  • By bus or tour:
    • If you want to pack your Gibraltar visit in a short time, a bus or tour is a great option. You can hop on a tour from many of the cities around southern Spain, and use it to see as much as possible as efficiently as possible with very little planning. You do have to get off the bus and walk through Gibraltar customs, but you get back on the bus before you walk across the runway.
I took a bus tour from Malaga with Visitanddo (A bus tour was the best option that fit with my timelines and the plans of the group I was travelling with).
Pro tip: go early to beat the border queues.

Morning: Take on the Rock!

  • Head straight to the Gibraltar Nature Reserve — that’s where the magic happens.
  • Choose your adventure: cable car up (views!) or hike if you’re feeling sporty.
  • Don’t miss:
    • 🐒 The Apes’ Den — cheeky Barbary macaques (keep your snacks hidden!).
    • 💎 St. Michael’s Cave — lit-up stalactites that look straight out of a fantasy movie.
    • 🌍 The Skywalk — glass platform + sweeping views over Africa and the Med.
  • Bring water, wear comfy shoes, and take your time soaking it all in.

Lunch: Time to Refuel

  • Head down to Casemates Square or Main Street — both buzzing with restaurants and cafés.
  • Options for every vibe:
    • Classic British food (I had vegan fish and chips at Sam’s Kitchen!!) and a pint if you’re missing home.
    • Spanish-style tapas for a local twist.
    • Chill at Ocean Village Marina for a lazy lunch by the yachts.
  • Bonus: grab a cheeky G&T — it’s basically a rite of passage here.

Afternoon: History, Shopping & More Views

  • Step back in time at the Great Siege Tunnels — carved right into the Rock!
  • Wander down Main Street for some window shopping and to view the contrast between the palm trees and the British mailboxes, and maybe even pick up some quirky souvenirs. If you don’t spend a lot of time in Britain, be sure to check out the Marks & Spencer – they even have a food section, where I picked up more vegan candy than I should have!!
  • Check out Gibraltar artworks from a variety of artists. Just off Main Street, facing the John Macintosh Square, is the Gibraltar Town Hall with the Mario Finlayson National Gallery. Featuring artworks in many different mediums from Gibraltarians, there aren’t any “famous” paintings but it’s a really cool, peaceful look into the area’s history.
  • If you’ve got time, swing by Europa Point — lighthouse views + the Moroccan coast in sight.
  • Optional detour: Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned or the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque for a taste of Gibraltar’s cultural mix.

Quick Tips for a Smooth Trip

  • 💷 Currency: Gibraltar pounds or British pounds — euros are often fine too, especially in the bigger stores or chain restaurants. I have a Wise Card so I just transferred a bit of my euros to pounds before I crossed the border and had enough for coffee, lunch, my M&S snacks, and few small souvenirs.
  • 🗣️ Language: English is the main one, but Spanish is everywhere too.
  • ☀️ Weather: Warm and sunny — I went in the dreamy autumn where the breeze was blowing and it was never too hot outside. If you get too warm, there are a ton of cafes to pop into for a cold drink and many benches under shaded trees.
  • 🎒 Pack: Passport, sunscreen, comfy shoes, and a bit of patience for the border. The border line looks so long, but I promise it works with British efficiency and usually moves quickly.
  • 🙈 Monkey manners: Don’t feed or touch them — they’re wild (and sassy). When I left St. Michael’s Cave, a monkey walked right up to a couple from my tour and stole their ice cream right out of their hands!

Gibraltar is like tasting a bit of Britain with the weather and nature of Spain. If you are backpacking (or even road-tripping southern Spain), make sure Gibraltar’s on your list. It’s one of those places you won’t forget — even if you just spend a day.
